How long does an e-rickshaw batteryactually last? Count cycles, then divide by your working days

The short answer: a lead-acid e-rickshaw set is rated 300–500 full cycles, a LiFePO4 pack 3,500 cycles at 1C to ≥80% SOH. On one cycle a day that is roughly 10–17 months against 7–9 years; on 1.5 cycles a day, 7–11 months against 6–8 years.

How long does an e-rickshaw pack last? Five questions that settle it

How long does an e-rickshaw battery actually last?

A lead-acid set is rated 300–500 full cycles; a LiFePO4 pack 3,500 cycles at 1C charge / 1C discharge to 80% state of health. A working rickshaw completes about one to one-and-a-half cycles a day, putting lead-acid at roughly 10–17 months and our lithium packs at 6–9 years. Depth of discharge, ambient temperature and the charger decide which end of that band you land on.

Why is pack life rated in cycles rather than in years?

Because a cycle is a physical event and a year is only a habit. A double-shift fleet on 1.5 cycles a day burns about 548 cycles a year; a school-run vehicle at half a cycle a day burns about 183. The same 3,500-cycle pack therefore serves a little over six years in the first fleet and well over a decade in the second.

How many cycles does your route put on the pack each year?

Divide daily distance by range per charge, then multiply by working days. On our published bands a passenger rickshaw uses 55–68 Wh/km and a loaded cargo trike 95–125 Wh/km, so a 100 km passenger day needs about 5.5–6.8 kWh. A 100Ah pack holds 5.12 kWh at 51.2V, so at 88–90% depth of discharge one shift already consumes most of a cycle.

What shortens the pack’s life in daily operation?

Four things, in the order we see them: charger mismatch, deep discharge, heat and cell imbalance. More than 70% of the lithium fires and premature failures in our own records trace to charger mismatch — a lead-acid constant-voltage unit has no CC-CV handshake and drives the pack into protection. Running to cut-off every shift, charging at 1C where we recommend under 0.5C, and a spread that never gets balanced each cost further months.

How do you read remaining life before the vehicle strands you?

Three readings off the BMS answer it: pack voltage and state of charge, the highest and lowest cell voltage, and the alarm bit mask. A static spread beyond 30 mV is the early warning line; past it the weakest cell breaches the 2.5V floor under load and the vehicle cuts out uphill with three bars showing. Ask for the BMS log and compare it against the 80% state-of-health retirement line.

Is the pack actually finished? Four checks before you replace it

Before a fleet writes off a pack, four readings settle it: state of health against nameplate, cell spread under load, the charger against the string count, and one logged shift. Each one separates a dead pack from a charger, harness or single-cell fault that costs far less to fix.

  1. 1

Read state of health, not the calendar

Pull a capacity report from the BMS or run a 1C load test. Below 80% of nameplate the pack is at the retirement line; above it the fault is usually the charger or one lagging cell.

Test: measured capacity at 1C vs nameplate
  2. 2

Measure the cell spread under load

A static delta over 30 mV means the balancing circuit has stopped working. A consistent pack ships with cell spread ΔV ≤ 3 mV and resistance spread ΔIR ≤ 0.5 mΩ — a wide spread kills a pack early while the label still says 3,500 cycles.

    Factory consistency ΔV ≤ 3 mV · ΔIR ≤ 0.5 mΩ
  3. 3

Check the charger against the string count

The unit must be CC-CV and matched to the series count. A lead-acid constant-voltage charger carries an equalisation stage above the LiFePO4 saturation voltage, and keeping it is the largest single cause of premature failure we see.

    16S charges to 58.4V · 24S to 87.6V
  4. 4

    Log one shift before deciding

Record one normal shift: charging start and finish, distance and payload. If the pack finishes the route but charging time has grown, the fault is the charger or a connection; if it fails at the same load, the pack is the answer.

How far apart are lead-acid and LiFePO4 on life?

The left column is the typical basis of the lead-acid sets our packs replace; the right column is the rating of the LiFePO4 packs we build. The middle rows are arithmetic — rated cycles divided by cycles per day — so your route moves those rows, never the first.

device_thermostatTemperature and life

How much pack life does cold — or heat — actually take?

ac_unit

Low temperature takes capacity, not structure

At −20℃ our packs retain ≥85% of rated capacity against about 40% for a conventional pack; the BMS cuts low-temperature charging inside 10 ms and the PTC layer, where fitted, warms cells at 1.5℃/min. What damages a pack is charging it hard while cold — see the extreme-cold guide.

local_fire_department

Heat is the quiet accelerator

The platform is rated −20℃ to 65℃, and outside that band the BMS derates on cell temperature. In hot climates we cap charging at 0.5C even though the cells accept 1C — the cheapest way to keep the 3,500-cycle rating intact over a five-year term.

helpReader FAQ

Which questions about battery life do buyers ask most?

Does charging after every trip make the battery last longer?expand_more
It helps, if you avoid deep discharge rather than chase full charge. On LiFePO4 keep the daily window between 15% and 95% instead of sitting on the cut-off; the whitepaper records 3,500 cycles even at 100% depth of discharge, and a 15%–95% window lifts that past 5,000. Lead-acid is the opposite: only 50–60% is usable and full discharge does permanent damage.
Is the 5-year warranty a calendar promise?expand_more
No. The term is 5 years or 3,500 cycles, whichever comes first, with capacity held at no less than 80% of nameplate. At 1.5 cycles a day, 3,500 cycles takes about 6.4 years — so nearly every fleet hits the five-year leg first, and only low-mileage vehicles reach the cycle limit.
Can I keep the charger that came with the lead-acid vehicle?expand_more
No. A lead-acid constant-voltage charger has an equalisation and float stage above the LiFePO4 saturation voltage; used continuously it decomposes the electrolyte, swells the cells and can punch through BMS sensing parts. Replace it with a CC-CV unit matched to the string count — 16S to 58.4V, 24S to 87.6V — and confirm the BMS handshake.
What damages a pack fastest in a hot country?expand_more
Charging at 1C in high ambient temperature, and closing the pack into an unventilated bay. The platform is rated −20℃ to 65℃ and derates above it; stay under 0.5C in hot climates and keep airflow around the case. Neither costs anything at purchase, and both decide whether the pack reaches 3,500 cycles.
What happens after the pack drops to 80% state of health?expand_more
80% is the retirement line for heavy-duty passenger duty, not a dead cell. The structure is intact, so the pack can move to backup storage, off-grid solar or low-speed warehouse vehicles for another 3–5 years, recovering roughly 20%–25% of its original value.
