Motive lithium systems for Ghanaian cargo anddelivery three-wheelers (60V / 72V)

Ghana’s electric three-wheeler demand sits on cargo, not passengers: in Accra and Kumasi, wholesale market distribution, building materials and supermarket last-mile runs are handled by cargo and delivery tricycles with open tippers or boxed bodies. We pre-load the desk on three duty bands — 95–125 Wh/km heavy cargo, 65–80 Wh/km standard delivery and light short-haul — so capacity and documents are settled at quotation stage.

insightsGhana Desk Baseline

Four things the Ghana desk fixes before the quotation goes out

Because Ghanaian duty is dominated by city cargo and delivery rather than passenger service, this desk pre-loads cargo configurations by payload band — heavy tipper, boxed delivery body and light short-haul — so the capacity tier and the shipping documents are named in the quote.

local_shippingLast-Mile Duty Cycle

City last-mile duty in Accra and Kumasi

A Ghanaian cargo three-wheeler rarely cruises long distance. Its work is dense point-to-point distribution: market loading bays, narrow lanes inside the market and congested arterials follow one another, so starts and stops per kilometre far exceed a passenger duty cycle of the same distance.

Open tipper · boxed bodyModelling basis, not local statisticsComparable fleet references under NDA
  • Body forms: open flatbed / railed tippers and roofed box bodies dominate, with folding side gates and lashing points for building materials, bottled water, general goods and supermarket crates.
  • Typical payload (configuration basis): the heavy end is configured at an 800–1000 kg rated payload, the middle is covered by the standard delivery tier (72V 120–140Ah), and high-frequency small-item work uses the light tier (60V 50–60Ah) to hold down total vehicle cost.
  • Trips per day (modelling basis): six to eight trips of 8–15 km give roughly 60–120 km a day. That is a sizing assumption, not local statistics — replace it with your own trip length and count and the capacity is recalculated.
  • Compounding losses: dry-season radiant road heat, rainy-season standing water and unpaved rolling resistance inflate laboratory consumption by 35%–50%, so capacity must be quoted on a road-resistance-corrected basis.
  • Charging: most vehicles charge overnight at the yard; shifts needing a midday top-up should specify a BMS charge strategy and charger that support it.

Consumption and capacity tiers are taken from the commercial vehicle matrix in the real capacity and range engineering guide: 95–125 Wh/km for heavy cargo, 65–80 Wh/km for typical West African duty and 28–35 Wh/km for light delivery. Ranges are loaded-duty targets; where payload or gradient differs from that baseline, recalculate with the dynamic road-resistance coefficient.

paymentsRelative Price Tiers

Relative price tiers by capacity (no amounts — formal quotation governs)

Two packs on the same 72V platform differ in cell count, BMS current class, busbar cross-section and enclosure structure, so they cannot share a price. The table only gives the ordering inside one series, to position the selection and frame a budget conversation — it does not represent any specific amount.

savingsLocal Cost Comparison

Running on fuel or lead-acid versus the lithium upgrade

Ghanaian cargo three-wheelers either still burn petrol or already carry lead-acid packs that must be replaced wholesale every few hundred cycles. Both keep cost per kilometre moving with fuel prices, FX and replacement frequency; lithium moves the cost up front and spreads it across 3,500 cycles.

Every shipping document prepared up front

UN38.3 test summaries, MSDS with the maritime transport condition appraisal and the dangerous-goods packaging appraisal result sheet (the Chinese DG packing certificate) ship with the container, and a Form E certificate of origin can be issued. Filing drawings, cell datasheets and BMS logic diagrams are supplied in English.

helpGhana Desk FAQ

What Ghanaian buyers and delivery fleets ask us most

Roughly what does a cargo tricycle battery cost in Ghana?expand_more
Four inputs set it: destination port and trade terms, rated payload, daily distance and motor power. Two 72V cargo three-wheelers doing heavy building-material work and boxed city delivery need different capacity tiers, so they cannot share a price. Send the vehicle, payload and daily distance and we model an FOB / CIF quotation. We publish no fixed amount, because a fixed number would not match the configuration.
If we order now, how long until the container is at Tema?expand_more
Standard models sample in 3–5 days and container scheduling normally runs 15–20 days; the sea leg follows the carrier’s sailing and slot schedule, and the confirmed dates are issued with the booking. Clearance is completed by the buyer or the local importer at Tema, and we supply UN38.3, MSDS, packing certificate and Form E with the container so nothing has to be filed after arrival.
How many trips does one pack cover on Ghanaian delivery duty?expand_more
On the heavy cargo basis of 95–125 Wh/km with a 72V 160–200Ah pack, loaded target range is 90–110 km. Against the modelling assumption of six to eight trips of 8–15 km a day, most shifts are covered on a single charge — but payload, gradient and road surface all move that number. Recalculate from your own trip length, or apply the dynamic road-resistance coefficient as described in the real capacity and range guide.
Can an existing petrol cargo three-wheeler be converted?expand_more
Yes. Weld-free mounting brackets and adapter harnesses are standard, so a local workshop can complete the installation from the manual. The voltage platform must match the existing controller and motor and is available in 48V, 60V and 72V. Before raising voltage, check the controller withstand rating and the motor back-EMF constant (Ke) to avoid punching through the controller or overheating the winding.
What certification does Ghana require for imported traction lithium batteries?expand_more
Destination access requirements are subject to current Ghanaian regulations, and the certification holder is normally the local importer or OEM. We cover the export and documentation side: UN38.3 test summaries, MSDS, the maritime transport condition appraisal, the dangerous-goods packing certificate and a Form E certificate of origin, plus filing drawings, cell datasheets, BMS logic diagrams and English test reports.
How do we pay, and which trade terms do you support?expand_more
EXW, FOB and CIF with conventional TT or L/C settlement, and a Form E certificate of origin can be issued. Container orders ship with a matched ratio of core consumables — BMS protection boards, high-current connectors, harnesses and chargers — with the spare-parts ratio and settlement route confirmed at quotation stage.
Can the existing lead-acid pack be swapped for lithium in place?expand_more
It can be a drop-in replacement. At the same nominal capacity a lead-acid pack weighs about 240 kg with only 50%–60% usable capacity and 300–500 cycles, against about 81 kg for lithium at a recommended 88%–90% DoD and 3,500 cycles (warranty 5 years / 3,500 cycles). The voltage platform must stay consistent: a lead-acid system’s full-charge voltage sits close to 16S LiFePO4, so never step up to a higher series count unilaterally.
Will the pack survive rainy-season flooding and dry-season heat?expand_more
The enclosure is IP67 steel with a potted BMS bay, and the operating window is -20℃ to 65℃ with high-temperature derating and low-temperature current limiting. Continuous discharge is 150–250A at platform level with 3C short-term peak, which covers the constant stop-start and loaded pull-away of city distribution.
