Kenya and East Africa: Tuk Tuk & Boda Boda battery systems48V / 60V / 72V automotive-grade modular architecture

Engineered for the steep gradients of the Great Rift Valley, equatorial 45℃ ground heat and punishing red-dirt corrugation. It is also built for the local operating ecosystem: native Safaricom M-Pesa wallet settlement and a PAYGO 4G-IoT soft-limiting loop for arrears. Automotive-grade LFP delivers eight years of service life and releases real margin for fleets in Nairobi and on the coast.

East Africa in the field: four extreme duty cycles, tested

From Bajaj tuk-tuk conversions on busy Nairobi streets to the tropical, salt-laden Indian Ocean climate of Mombasa, TIANQIU covers everything from firmware to local workshop enablement.

Labyrinth double seal against red dustAnodised 6063 aluminium extrusionAnti-theft locking pinWire-safe replacement of the 205cc bay
  • Nairobi red-dirt road and gradient duty (1,795m altitude): for the steep rises and drops of the Rift Valley the pack sustains a 3C peak burst for 30 seconds, eliminating loaded stall on gradients, and carries a labyrinth double seal against red dust. Maximum gradient confirmed at 22% fully loaded.
  • FIELD 02 · Mombasa salt spray and coastal corrosion: average humidity along the Indian Ocean coast is 88%. The enclosure uses anodised 6063 aluminium extrusions with a weather-resistant fluorocarbon coating, and all power and signal terminals are IP67 rated to ASTM B117 salt-spray standards.
  • FIELD 03 · Local workshop conversion and structural fit: a standardised bracket assembly and anti-theft locking pin replace the original 205cc engine bay without cutting a single wire. A complete single-vehicle electrification conversion takes ≤120 minutes.
  • 4G-IoT telemetry and asset risk control (M-Pesa PAYGO): a built-in Quectel 4G module with e-SIM connects directly to Safaricom and Airtel base stations. Arrears trigger two-stage soft limiting rather than a hard cut, preventing the rear-end collisions that remote shutdown causes. USSD *334# API supported.

Three core East African operating zones: terrain, thermal and mechanical engineering

Because Kenyan operating conditions swing so widely between cities, TIANQIU refuses a one-size-fits-all catalogue product and instead offers localised firmware and reinforced hardware options to volume customers.

Average altitude 1,795m with a day-night spread above 18°C. Long peak-hour congestion means frequent regenerative braking, which drives localised cell heating.

BMS 55°C derating protection: prevents summer afternoon thermal trips and keeps operations continuous.

Safaricom M-Pesa & PAYGO: from wallet repayment to two-stage soft limiting

In Kenya, 93% of adults use the M-Pesa mobile wallet. The hardest problems in asset finance have always been collecting arrears, and the rear-end collisions caused by remote shutdown at speed. The TIANQIU BMS two-stage soft-limiting logic balances collection rates against rider safety.

  1. 1smartphone

Rider pays daily via M-Pesa (USSD *334# / App)

The rider enters the operator Paybill account and tops up discharge time by the day or by the week.

  2. 2cloud_sync

The operator server completes a millisecond handshake with the TIANQIU IoT API, and the 4G module updates the pack discharge countdown.

  3. 3speed

First arrears stage: soft limiting at 15km/h

Past the rental due date the main relay is not opened. Instead the rated current is limited to 20%, guaranteeing a safe low-speed ride back to a payment point.

The BMS 4G-IoT telemetry protocol stack

The operator server, the TIANQIU telematics cloud and the in-vehicle BMS communicate over MQTT / TLS 1.3 with end-to-end encryption, so every step from wallet payment to discharge quota update is auditable.

  • MQTT / TLS 1.3 end-to-end encryption: the handset triggers the Safaricom M-Pesa API, which fires an asynchronous webhook in under 400ms; the telematics cloud then issues a dynamic AES-256 decryption token to the BMS controller.
  • 4G cellular link: the APN uses the Safaricom IoT network, and the BMS executes PWM speed limiting, cell-level thermal monitoring and geofence decisions.
  • Sleep current below 2.5 mA: 45 days of continuous standby, with data packets protected by automotive-grade AES-256 hardware encryption.
  • Operator feedback: “After moving to the TIANQIU 60V system with PAYGO, our fleet bad-debt rate fell from 24.5% in the lead-acid era to under 0.8%, and we eliminated the rear-end collision claims that hard remote shutdown used to cause.” — Head of a leading Nairobi conversion operator

helpExpert Insights & Engineering Q&A

Engineering and compliance questions on Kenyan projects

How does the KEBS PVoC process actually work, and will it create port inspection charges?expand_more
TIANQIU completes inspection with SGS or CCIC at the Chinese factory before the container is loaded, and issues the export CoC (Certificate of Conformity). Because all compliance testing and document issuance happen before shipment, the cargo enjoys fast release at Mombasa and never incurs demurrage from missing documents or forced unstuffing.
If Safaricom 4G coverage is weak in remote Rift Valley areas, will PAYGO lock the vehicle by mistake?expand_more
Never. The TIANQIU BMS uses a dual mechanism: an offline grace period plus a local hardware RTC clock. If a vehicle enters an area with no cellular coverage, the BMS automatically starts a 72-hour grace period and maintains normal power output. Only after that grace period expires, and only when the local clock confirms arrears, does it apply the 15km/h soft limit. Field staff can also activate the vehicle with an emergency key over offline BLE.
At equatorial ground temperatures above 40°C, how are thermal fade and cycle life protected?expand_more
We use high-end A-grade automotive LiFePO4 prismatic aluminium-cased cells with an operating ceiling of 65°C. Thermal phase-change flame-retardant silicone fills the gaps between cells, and the modules sit in a heat-isolating ducted bay. Designed for continuous heavy-load operation in 38°C East African heat, the cells are held inside a safe temperature band and the system targets extended deep-cycle service (capacity retention ≥80%), backed by a 5-year or 150,000 km powertrain warranty.
For Bajaj RE and TVS King conversions, do the electrical and mechanical interfaces need re-cutting?expand_more
No structural cutting is needed. TIANQIU tooled a standard non-destructive adapter bracket specifically for the Bajaj RE 205cc/Deluxe and the TVS King, locating directly onto the original engine mount bushing holes. The harness uses IP67 waterproof, vibration-proof connectors and includes a communication converter for the original instrument cluster, so a workshop technician completes one vehicle in about two hours.
How many 60V 120Ah tuk-tuk packs fit in a single 20GP container?expand_more
A standard 20ft general-purpose dangerous-goods container, within IMO UN packing weight limits, carries 144 60V 120Ah packs — 12 heavy-duty fumigated wooden pallets in a double-layer arrangement. The sea freight and dangerous-goods insurance cost per pack is therefore very low, which makes the landed price in Mombasa strongly competitive.
If a customer already runs their own IoT cloud platform, can TIANQIU BMS firmware be integrated?expand_more
Fully. Our 4G module supports redirection to a customer-owned private server, including configurable MQTT and HTTP RESTful API endpoints and customer-supplied TLS certificates. We provide the complete protocol dictionary, C and Python unpacking SDKs and Postman test samples, so a customer software team typically completes full integration and goes live within three working days.
